'Byzantium - Masterpieces from Greek Collections' traveling exhibition

An exhibition tentatively titled "Byzantium - Masterpieces from Greek Collections" will travel to the US in the autumn of 2013, containing some 300 masterpieces from Greek museums, public and private collections and monasteries, as well as finds from recent excavations, to be shown first at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, followed by the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Villa in Malibu, California. The exhibition, which will run through spring 2014, aims to familiarise the American public with the Hellenic civilization throughout the Byzantine era, and thus will cover all periods of Byzantine history, from 330 AD to 1453 AD.

PSI talks near agreement, Commission says

Negotiations over a Greek state bond swap programme (PSI) are nearing an agreement, an European Commission spokesman said on Wednesday. Amadeu Altafaj, a spokesman for EU Commissioner Olli Rehn, said there was a way to achieve significant progress in talks between Greek authorities and financial institutions, based on the Oct. 26 decisions and noted that talks must continue and come to an agreement, preferably within the month.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus to make decisive steps towards a final agreement on the Cyprus problem, noting that at this state of the talks, to maintain the momentum and continue negotiations, even in an intensive manner, is not enough. Speaking after talks at the Greentree Estate in Long Island, New York, with President of the Republic of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, Ban said that at the end of March he would be hearing about the process from his Special Adviser on Cyprus Alexander Downer and, ''if his report is positive, consistent with the relevant Security Council resolutions and following consultations with the two sides, I intend to call a multilateral conference in late April or early May.''

Award-winning filmaker Theo Angelopoulos dies

Internationally renowned award-winning filmmaker Theodoros (Theo) Angelopoulos died late Tuesday at the age of 76 after being seriously injured in a road accident hours earlier while shooting scenes for his new film "The Other Sea" in a tunnel in the Drapetsona district of Piraeus.Angelopoulos, who was hit by a motorcycle on Tuesday afternoon while filming on location in Drapetsona, died later in an Athens hospital.

PSI talks enter final stage, FinMin says

Negotiations with the private sector over a Greek bond swap programme (PSI) are entering their final stages, Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said here on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters after an Ecofin meeting in Brussels, the Greek minister said: “We have the approval and the support of the Eurogroup to complete talks with the private sector in the next few days”. He noted that the goal was to complete the form of the PSI within the next eight days and a Greek public offer to private creditors to be made by Feb. 13. “It will take a few days between completing the talks and the official announcement,” Venizelos said.

Eurogroup meeting decides continuation of PSI talks

A Eurogroup meeting on Monday decided the continuation of talks between Greece and private bond holders towards achieving a final agreement over a PSI program. Greek Finance ministry sources, said here in Brussels, that the aim was a full implementation of October 26-27 decisions and noted that given the timetable of Greek state bond maturities, another target was that an official offer for PSI be presented by February 13. All relative issues will be resolved at a Eurogroup’s working group or during a Eurogroup teleconference meeting.

Merkel says 'no need' for bridge loan

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday referred to the thoughts for interim financing of Greece in case negotiations with private creditors for a debt swap will not be completed stressing that “the question of a bridge loan isn’t on my agenda”. Merkel made the comments in a joint press conference with Belgian prime minister Elio Di Rupo after their meeting here, underlining that there is enough time until March to “work on a new Greece program”.

Scepticism is prevailing in the Greek fuel market over the repercussions of the imposition of an embargo on Iranian oil, as of July 1, since Greece is one of the European Union countries covering a considerable part of its needs in crude oil from Iran. Repercussions have already appeared with consumers in past days, as the increase in international fuel prices, in light of the embargo's imposition, combined with the strengthening of the dollar as against the euro, have resulted in the increase of retail prices as well.

IIF chief confident of achieving final deal on PSI with Athens

Institute of International Finance (IIF) chief Charles Dallara on Sunday appeared confident that the proposal he presented to the Greek government for voluntary PSI to reduce Greece's debt will finally become an agreement, in statements to a private Greek TV channel in Paris. "The main pieces of the puzzle are in place," Dallara said but did not reveal details of his proposal, especially in terms of the interest rate for the new bonds that would replace the old ones. Neither did he hazard any prediction about how much time it would take to achieve the final agreement nor whether announcement could be made during the Eurogroup meeting on Monday.

Samaras meets with EU-IMF troika

New Democracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras and the party's economic officers met on Saturday evening with the EU-IMF troika at the ND headquarters in central Athens. During the one-hour meeting, which was held in a "good climate", the two sides discussed, inter alia, the issue of cuts in auxiliary pensions, although the discussion was not in-depth, according to ND sources. The same sources said that an issue of cutting the Christmas and holiday bonuses was not discussed during the meeting, and opined that there is no specific proposal on the matter, but just thoughts and discussions at this time. The ND sources further said that the discussions focused on substantive and also technical matters, and that the ND side presented its firm positions on the issues of taxation and growth.
