The Education Co-ordicator’s Office of Great Britain is the administrative base of the Educational Mission of Greece. The Education Office represents the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religions and functions under the auspices of the Greek Embassy and Consulate in London. It collaborates closely with:

1)     Archdiocese Thyateira and Great Britain

2)     The equivalent office of the Cypriot Embassy in Great Britain

3)     With the EFEPE and community officials of schools in British

4)     The Greek Parent Association of Great Britain

5)     The Greek Parent and Guardian Association of the Governmental Greek Schools in London

 

The Educational Mission of Greece in London is made up of Greek educators of all subjects and levels, which the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religions delegates from Greece. The Education Office also employs local teachers. Education Co-ordinator of the Education Office of Great Britain is Mr. Vasilios Anagnostou.

 

Duties of the Education Office of Great Britain

 

· Professional guidance on educational matters of the Greek language as a foreign of second language in the homogeny

·        Projection of Greek culture and tradition through both the English and Greek languages.

·        Administrative and professional supervision of the educational work done in the Greek day schools of London

·        To support the work done in the Greek community schools of Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

·        Promotion of Greek language and culture with the support of the equivalent courses in British Universities.

 

The education office of Great Britain provides educators for British Universities and institutions. Specifically five educators have been placed by the secretariat of PODE for the teaching and the promotion of the Greek language at the following universities: a) Cambridge b) Reading c) Surrey d) Birmingham and e) St. Andrews’. In addition the Education Office has placed philologists at the Royal Holloway University, at the University College of London and at Queen’s University of Belfast. Finally it has placed educators at the Hellenic Centre to teach Greek and to prepare candidates for the Greek Attainment Certificate.

 

Aiming at the improvement of the Greek as a Mother tongue courses, the Education Office holds regular educational seminars, conferences. These seminars give opportunities to Greek teachers for professional improvement. In the attempt to promote the Greek language and Greek culture in general, the Education Office holds frequent events with main topics such as the Greek Attainment Certificate. The Greek School of London

The Greek School in London founded in 1983 by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and the General Consulate of Greece in London. It is officially recognised as an Independent School by the DfEE. The aim of the school is to provide free nursery, primary and secondary education to the Greek Community in London. The school follows the Greek National Curriculum with the addition of an intensive English programme. The status of the school is equivalent to that of the other state schools in Greece. The tutors are seconded by the Hellenic Ministry of Education except from those who teach English and French who are native speakers.
