ELENI MOUZAKITI – PENELOPE PETSINI

UNCANNY CITY – An Exhibition of Photographs

Century Gallery, 1-15 Cremer Street,

Shoreditch, London E2 8HD

The exhibition is about the city at night as an ambiguous place: it is a photographic exploration of the themes of uncertainty, uneasiness, anxiety and of allure, this mixture of emotions that the metropolis evokes at night.

The city is a place, the meaning of which develops in the direction of ambivalence; it can be seductive and threatening at once, familiar and unfamiliar, friendly and strange or dangerous. , but also the place of fear and danger, of dark secrets, that we can only inhabit furtively. Sleep, secrets, dreams, madness, beasts, they are all aspects of the uncanny that may be related to the city at night.

Greek Icons of Light and Passion:

A concert of works by Greece’s leading composers of today

Purcell Room

South Bank Centre

Box Office: 0207 960 4242

Greece in Britain returns to the South Bank with an exciting and colourful concert, which explores the musical heritage created by two of the great twentieth century composers, Nikos Skalkottas and Iannis Xenakis, and illustrates how their influence can be heard in the works of composers writing today. It has been programmed as a survey of recent Greek music and shows how Greek composers have fused both folk and classical traditional culture with West European modernism.

Britain’s most innovative chamber group, the Composer’s Ensemble, will introduce the works of three internationally acclaimed composers, as well as music by two talented composers of the younger generation. The concert features the distinguished Greek soprano Mina Polychronou and English counter-tenor Andrew Watts.

Works by Theodore Antoniou, Periklis Koukos, Giorgos Koumendakis, George Kouroupos and Nestor Taylor.

Presented by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture.

GREECE  ON  SCREEN

On the occasion of the Greek Presidency of the European Union, the Greek Film Centre and the Hellenic Foundation for Culture present a collection of ten films, in association with the National Film Theatre, the Edinburgh Film House and Cardiff’s Chapter.

The films included in this series have achieved international recognition and have proved that they can communicate with an international audience without losing their identity, indigenous culture and distinctive ‘Greekness’. They mirror and attempt to encapsulate the social, political and economic changes that have engulfed Greece over the past fifty years of its turbulent historical journey. Through these films, a massive, national-scale soul-searching exercise manifests itself in the shape of the moral and artistic responsibility that Greek film-makers feel it is their duty to document. The Greek cinema remains alive and, despite the global crisis, manages to maintain a noteworthy presence amongst international film cognoscenti.  It is hoped that the London and Edinburgh seasons will open the way for British audiences to become better acquainted with Greek cinema.”

The Society of Painter-Etchers was founded in 1880 to seek recognition for artists working in etching, engraving and mezzotint. At that time the Royal Academy refused to recognise printmaking as a creative rather than reproductive art. In 1888 the Society was granted its Royal Charter. The Society further expanded to encompass engravers in 1898, becoming the Royal Society of Etcher-Engravers (RE) and in 1989 acknowledged advances in technology by becoming the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers.

The Society's major exhibition of Members' work is held at Bankside Gallery each year, normally in May, and  this year it  returns to the theme of an exchange with international printmakers: It is the turn of seven Greek printmakers, all of whom are Professors or Assistant Professors at Athens or Thessaloniki Schools of Art. Their style of work is extremely varied: for example, Vicky Tsalamata uses images from classical Greece, from the seals of tombs; Tonia Nicolaidou is inspired by water and uses imaginative techniques of relief and origami to express her ideas. It is a collection of works which promises to be an intriguing and imaginative centrepiece to the annual Members exhibition.

MODE PLAGAL IN THE UK

The Club Series concludes wth two concerts by Mode Plagal in Bath and Cardiff.  “Hipper than any American record I’ve heard for a long time” was how the U.S. trade magazine Modern Drummer described Mode Plagal’s eponymous debut release in 1995. The group has since been perfecting its distinct sound, a blend of jazz-funk and Balkan folk. Following the release of “Mode Plagal III”, which made it to the Top 20 World Music Charts Europe in March and April 2002, they are back with the album “Beyond the Bosphorus” , made in collaboration with Bosphorus,  aTurkish collective of classical and traditional musicians.
